San Antonio Independent Living Services – Personal Attendants Pool Demonstration Project

Personal Attendants Pool Demonstration Project

Statewide Need
The number of people who require personal assistance services has grown and is expected to continue to increase. This dramatic growth in the number of people receiving support at home (and thereby avoiding institutionalization) is accompanied by a crisis in finding qualified, motivated personnel to perform personal assistance tasks. The economy and low wages for personal attendants have discouraged potential workers from choosing this line of work, and there is no support system in place to assist those already working in the field. Projects that utilize innovative means have the potential to increase both recruitment and retention of personal attendants.

Project Goal
Develop a best practice model and demonstrate strategies to increase the number of personal attendants available in the community.

Project Summary
San Antonio Independent Living Services (SAILS) proposed to develop a program and establish partnerships within Region 8 of the Department of Human Services. This would allow them to establish a centralized department where recruitment, training, and placement of personal attendants would be affected. SAILS intended to create and have all agencies involved sign memorandums of understanding. The organization planned to use the workforce centers with the Alamo Area Workforce Agency, Golden Crescent Workforce Agency, and Middle Rio Grande Development Corporation to recruit and place individuals interested in becoming personal attendants.  [/two_third][one_third_last]
